Bunyip Update- a ruthlessly efficient 648km training session!

Whilst two Bunyips for unavailable due to injury of family commitments B1 & B2 decided they still head on down to train in Sydney. Their day went something like this:
5.30am~ B2 arrives at B1’s for breakfast.
5.45am~ B1 & B2 depart Canberra for Turramurra
8.45am~ B1 determines B1 & B2 are lost.
8.47am ~ New route determined! (Thanks Apple!)
8.57~ Arrive Turramurra station. First 310 kms down, this is easy. With time spare to grab a pie for second breakfast before getting the…
9.10~ train.
9.43~ Arrive Berowra
9.45~ Meander to Berowra Community Centre…
9.50~ Start!
1.10pm Arrive at the beautiful Apple Tree bay for lunch. 14.5 km down(though not as quick as the first 310) B1 & B2 determined that section 3 is absolutely wonderful, with good variation which makes the time fly! The only bad part of the short section from “underpant flag” pole to the Pacific Hwy, but it is blissful after that!
1.25pm After lunch, B1 almost slipping on a dead fish, and the final jettisoning of layers of clothes off we went to the Sphinx Memorial.
2.40 pm Arrive Sphinx Memorial. Well that was (relatively) easy, even including the en route little patrol. So what to do next...
2.40 Depart Sphinx Memorial for the 6.3 km to the train station. We have to say as we were just wearing shorts and t-shirts we did feel very underdressed compared to the rugged up Sydney-siders. We determined we have acclimatised to Canberra all too well.
3.50 Arrive Turramurra station. Yay!! 27.5 km down in a shade under 6 hours. 4.00 pm Depart for home!
7.18 Arrive at B1’s house. B1 & B2 congratulate themselves on their efficiency! 648 km in 13 hours 33 minutes!

This week is wine tasting week raising funds for Oxfam. And for all of you out there who are considering donating to the Bunyips, but haven’t gotten around to it yet, the end of the financial year is approaching so now is the best time to show your suppor

INTRODUCING: The team

Team update (PART ONE)

On the weekend, the team trekked up to Sydney (pun intended!) for a practice trek and decided to tackle stages 4 – 6 (Sphinx Memorial to Kambora Public School) on Saturday, making sure we finished with plenty of time for Bindi to return to Canberra for the rugby and Jen to glam it up to go see SATC.

We set off early in the morning, starting at The Sphinx Memorial, but had only gone a few metres before Yana had broken her walking pole. Thank goodness we had Brett who was able to work his magic and before long, we were off again, this time with a functioning walking pole!

With Bindi as Map Master, we navigated the descent into our first gully and came across our first water crossing. Brett sacrificed dry feet as he found a route across and the girls all followed (enjoying dry feet). After a climb through to St.Ives and a few more kms on the track, we discovered it wasn’t to be our only water crossing. Throughout the day, we had another four crossings – and we learnt to take off our shoes and properly dry our feet before setting off again.

10am was lunch time and Brett pulled out the most incredible gourmet spread (he’s set the bar high for the support crew). The spread was complete with sandwiches, tailor made according to each member’s preferences, home made, hand rolled sushi (and soy sauce lovingly packed so it wouldn’t spill) and of course chocolate M&Ms. Brett even supplied the hand sanitiser.

Team update (PART TWO)

We discovered throughout the morning the wildlife of the track… Leeches… We all managed to pick up a few hitchhikers, mainly on our shoes. Note to oneself: leech checks are worthwhile!

We also discovered another form of wildlife on the track… rude runners. This species are typically male, tall, fit and out to prove just how great they are. Often calling trekkers “soft” and calling out other obscenities as they pass said trekkers, they are a form of wildlife one must ignore.

Overall, the day went well – we covered 17kms (a few of them were unnecessary as Map Master battled with poor signage and we took a detour and then back-tracked) before finishing at about 1pm.

For our first trek on the track, overall a good experience. It was a great way to set some realistic expectations regarding pace and terrain. It also gave us a chance to assess whether our sustenance was appropriate and whether we needed to carry anything extra in our backpacks (note to self: pack extra socks for each stage of trek) or remove anything from backpack not necessary (note to self: it all seems pretty essential at the moment!).

Overall rating: 9/10
High: the view from the trek, Brett’s gourmet lunch
Low: leeches and rude dude on the track
Swearing Jar balance: Jen and Brett $0, Bindi $3, Yana $43 (with the frequent profanities discount).

Week 1

Oxfam trail walker activities have kicked off in earnest this week for team Bunyip! Our first fundraising activity involved a cake stall at Bindi’s work which raised over $300. This is great for team Bunyip, but less good for Bindi’s workmates waist lines! Thanks you to all for ICT Health and ISB who helped us out by scoffing cakes, biscuits and slices. An even bigger thank you to Jennie and Paula who helped out with the baking!!! This week saw our first ‘proper’ training walk as a team, replete with support team member Kerryn getting into the spirit of supporting the team. Whilst we had been training individually, and there was a lazy partial team walk around LBG last week we figured it was time to get (semi-) serious. So Tuesday night saw us meeting up at the base of Mount Ainslie for our first team, trail, hill climb and NIGHT training session all in one (efficient eh!). In a great start we managed 10.86 Km in 2hours 5 minutes for an average speed of just under 5.5km/hr. Not bad seeing as we busted Mount A off the bat. A good time was had by all. Yana enjoyed the size and number of Eastern Greys we have to share the trail with. Jen demonstrated some awesome survival skills by putting bodies (anybody) between herself and a large roo which surprised us (it is good to see we mean so much to her). Brett decided the training session should involved carrying a stack of anatomy text books would be a good idea (at least they would have assisted on trail diagnosis of any injuries) and Bindi created head lamp envy with her new head torch which could double as a space beacon if necessary. Next week will be another training walk at night in Canberra, who knows where yet! In the coming weeks we will be updating you as to our training (with photos soon) and fundraising activities so please check back in. While you are here feel free to make a donation towards our target of $5000 for Oxfam (lets face it, do it now and there will be less harassment in
