Stage 2 out & back
Sunday 21 June, miraculously we escaped the rain. Contrary to our expectations the track conditions were pretty good. As you all probably noticed it has been bucketing down last week, so we were prepared for rain and leeches, none of the above. Starting stage 2 Cowan to Berowra on fresh legs seems to make a difference since we covered it 2hours and 16minutes. A solid effort we might say. Backtracking from Berowra to Cowan was a bit harder for most. Again a great confidence booster. Love the hills.

Sunday 14th June
It had been three weeks since the whole team had got together for training session. We had been doing our own training in the meantime of course though. The goal for this walk was to complete the first two stages of the walk in less than 5 hours. An aggressive goal given that the second section is undoubtedly the toughest stage of the track. We started at 7am in Brooklyn, to a cool morning and a beautiful sunrise. We were soon peeling off layers of clothing, having got straight into a quick jog until we hit the first uphill section. To our surprise the first section wasn't as tough as we expected. We ran most of the flat and downhill sections and Alistair pushed us on the uphills. Before we knew it we’d covered the first section (15 km) in less than 2 hours 15min. We stopped off for 10 mins at the shop in Cowan to pick up some snack bars and sports drinks before embarking on stage two (Cowan to Berowra). We ran off again to a good start on section 2 but were soon reminded how tough this stage was with a seemingly endless series of climbs and drops. With 5km to go we all had our own little struggles, sore knees, tight hamstrings and glutes. A little competition between Brad and Mark for the lowest heart rates kept us laughing the whole way. It was great to finish the second section in 2.5 hours, so a total time of 4 hours 53 min. There’s lots of tough training ahead of us, but we were all very happy with how today’s training went. To be continued…

Wine Tasting Night! - 12th June
On Friday 12th June, Team Mosman Express held a blind wine tasting evening at Mark's place. 23 people attended and the event was a great success with $410 raised for Oxfam. Attendees brought along a bottle of wine priced at $20 or under with the objective being to try to select the wine which would rate highest in the blind taste testing. Mosman Express have set up an arrangement with Winepoint to re-badge some of their wines as 'Oxfam Fundraising Wines' and the three Oxfam red wines were included in the mix to see how they performed. All three wines obtained very respectable scores, but Muddy Creek did particularly well coming in joint second out of 17 wines. If you are interested in purchasing bottles of the 'Oxfam Trailwalker' range of wine, an order form can be found here : http://home.exetel.com.au/markayres/Trailwalker/TrailwalkerWines.doc

Training session 1
Sunday 24 May 2009 First training session for our challenge. 7.30am start at CP 6 (Kambora Public school) through to Roseville Bridge (CP 7) and via Ararat Reserve (CP 8) onto Seaforth, halfway into the last stage. A bit sore and stiff when we finished at 12.30pm. Great to get out onto the track, besides a few leeches, no dramas. Only 20odd km, but great for a first time out.
