Bungonia Weekend Training 14-15th August
Team 98, walkers and support crew, arrived at Reevesdale in Bungonia last Friday night in preparation for a massive training day on Saturday. We all had an early night, except for our very predictable Able Semen. Saturday morning 3 members of Team 98 rose early to indulge in the "Scribes" breakfast of bacon and egg toasted sandwiches as they set off down the driveway to make the 11.5 km walk out to the Bungonia rangers station, where they then began their gorge walk, culminating in the 11.5 walk back to Reevesdale. All in all, Team 98 walked approx. 35kms on Saturday in good preparation for the Oxfam in 2 weeks time. Of course, as already mentioned, our very predictable Able Semen knocked on the "scribes" door at 8pm, asking if anyone was awake to be greeted with -"they have all gone.....". Not believing they would go without him, he then sat down to a hearty breakfast before being driven out to meet the rest of the team by this time nearly at the Rangers station. Team 98 set a good pace throughout the day all arrived home on foot despite the support crew leader, Pam, going out in the car late in the day to offer respite.....We all shared a good night around the open fire discussing out support crew roles and doing some fine tuning to our last minute planning for the walk weekend, as well as relegating responsibilities for our Trivia night.

TEAM 98 TRAINING SUNDAY 26TH JULY
Our invited guest (THE ONLY ONE WHO ACCEPTED) Karl Versteeg, accompanied Capt. Bligh and Kahuna to completed bulk of Stages 1 & 2 in 8 hours flat with stops. According to Karl's GPS we covered 27.6 kms, leaving the station at 8.00 am and arriving Berowra CC at 4pm. We will need to add 30 mins to that part of the track as we left the Hawkesbury River station (not quite the starting point) missing the first major uphill section. Chief Chef (Pam) joined us on first section as far as Cowan RS, acquitting herself well, then jumped on the train back to Brooklyn to collect our car. Later in the day she hit some golf balls, what a woman! OH OH, both Capt. Bligh and Chief Chef were seen languishing in an Epsom salts bath by the late afternoon - separately, of course! Karl was a wonderful addition for the day and had a multitude of apocryphal stories to delight all of our team, and anyone who passed by. Scribe informs Team 98 that Mr. Christian has safely returned from Peru fighting fit.

CALLING ALL KEEN KEEN PARTICIPANTS/ 26TH JULY.
For those who previously mentioned their keenness to participate in one of Team 98's training exercises, your enthusiasm was overwhelming! In fact the only positive response was from Karl Versteeg. Excuses range from: "I'm playing golf with my wife this Sunday." "I have a cold and anyway my training gear is in Terrigal." "I have a cracked toenail/fractured eyelash",etc. I can only assume that the 29 kms of stages 1 & 2 was too short for most of you, so how about I extend this invitation again in a few weeks and bump the distance up to 40/50 kms. To all those who have put their hands into their pockets for Team 98 - a BIG thankyou. For those miserable sods who haven't there is still time to go to our personal Oxfam webpage - www2.oxfam.org.au/trailwalker/Sydney/team/98 and DONATE NOW.

NIGHT TRAINING 15th JULY
Team 98 had a night exercise and Rick has expressed both concern/advantage, not quite sure which one, because they did not see another Oxfam team all night. Maybe our guys are way ahead, or way behind.....! Any sightings let us know? Team 98 set off from CP4 (Sphinx Memorial at Kuringai) to CP5 (St. Ives Showground- then back to Kitchener Road, distance 11-12 kms - Time; 2hrs. 25 mins. There were some highlights including the fantastic clear sky and the sandwiches, provided of course by our Chief Chef, Pam (Master Sandwich Chef awaits). Rick reports that our Semen and Kahuna performed well on the evening. However, Team 98 have requested we all chip in and purchase some appropriate training shorts for our very Able Semen! The sight of his rear end is an ongoing distraction, not a good one, for both the team and the poor wildlife.

5th July Training Day
Our Captain (Rick) has reported Team 98, plus UK guest negotiated CP7 (Roseville Bridge) to CP8 (Ararat) then on to finish at Georges Heights. The absent Mr. Christian (Paul) is off to Peru this week for a 10 day grade 7 trek, so he will be absent from training for several weeks. We are pretty sure he will be fit for our Oxfam walk. Sadly, Able Semen arrived to this training session in a Silver Service cab, still reeking of alcohol from the night before. Oh, well nothing new in Semen's training regime. It is good to maintain your lifestyle.....Why let training get in the way! Fortunately for Able Semen, the UK guest woke him in time. Capt. Bligh determined to whip this recalcitrant Semen into shape, took off at a cracking pace out of Davidson Park at 7.20am. Meanwhile, Able Semen's alarm finally went off some 35 minutes later creating havoc amongst the birdlife and a group of Japanese, either come out of hiding from WWII or on some clandestine venture. Ararat was reached without further incident and the boys headed down to Bantry Bay while at the same time thinking of the 493 steps up to Seaforth Oval. UK guest took a phone call from his wife just as we hit the bottom of these stairs and chatted right to the top, with Able Semen huffing and puffing in slow pursuit. Leaving Seaforth Oval we were passed by another team, easy to see Mr. Christian was absent, he would not have allowed this. But, Capt. Bligh was more considerate to UK guests photographic opportunities. Able Semen now smelt the coffee coming from Balmoral, however, by this time the Capt. was considering bodily violence against Able Semen who got lost at the bottom of Balmoral stairs.....(shades of 2009). Thankfully one mobile call and he was back on track and on the road to the finishing line at Georges Heights. Feeling the 19kms had left us a little underdone, and with little regard to Able Semen's complaints (and there were many) we continued to Taronga wharf stopping briefly for a coffee at Clifton

Captain Bligh (RIchard Glover)
Captain Bligh has a cold this week..... Paul Bedford walked the 7 bridges in Sydney and he has sore feet. Poor show from all the "others" this week.

Training gets under way for Team 98
Our team has now had 2 training sessions, one of which was on the Manly to Spit walk, the other is taking place today on the Oxfam trail near the Roseville Bridge. Meanwhile, Ken Glover is in danger of becoming our new "Phantom" as he is sitting on a beach in Bali this week. But we will give him the benefit of the doubt, and keep you posted about his commitment. Hugh is of course our "able seaman", whose wife is pregnant with their second child, so he might be a little distracted. We now refer to Hugh as our "able semen." Spot the comedy. Go Team 98, commitment is mounting.

Weekend Bonding and Planning for 2010
A recent weekend away at our training camp in Bungonia comprised Rick and Pam Glover, Hugh and Lucinda Williamson, "Peanut" Williamson, Paul and Deborah Bedford, and our new recruit Ken Glover with wife Jan. It was a very productive time spent planning a training regime, support-crew information and generally lots of eating and drinking. Our sincere thanks to Hugh and Lucinda for their continued hospitality. This weekend saw a little dissent in the ranks, but be assured Rick is once again our beloved Captain Bligh. Paul resumes his position of Mr. Christian, and Hugh and Ken remain "able seamen." Of course, the dissent and possible mutiny came from the "able seamen", but was quickly quashed over a number of bottles of red wine, and a very lengthy speech from Captain Bligh on just why this was not going to take place...... All in all we are all in agreement that this is a great venture worthy of our time, energy and commitment. Best of luck Team 98.
