It's a learning experience

10 Things that I have learned. 1. "Only 2 km to go" is a fairly elastic measurement with lots of scope for extension. 2. There is no upside to 43 hours without sleep 3. Running shoes are remarkably thin underneath and stones have special blister seeking technology built in 4. You can have too much Gatorade. (Oh, so very much) 5. It's cold at 5am in August 6. The drugs DO work - just not always as intended 7. Balmoral Beach does not rock at 9 pm on a Saturday 8. Swearing helps (but keep it nice) 9. Nothing is so desperate that I will want to eat a mint chocolate flavoured power gel 10. It's not "just" a walk

100km later...

post image

What a walk! 100km completed - Almost 38 hours later, blistered, tired and sore. 6 months of training, fundraising, coordinating and drinking endless amounts of powerade it's all over. There were definitely times during the walk where it would have been too easy to just retire but we persevered. There was swearing, shouting, groaning and lots of tears - and that was just from Katie! Thank you to all our support crew and friends/family who were sending messages of support throughout the event - we couldn't have done it without you! The volunteers on the day were outstanding. The whole organisation of the event was unbelievable and we thank every person that was involved - an amazing effort. So, who's ready to start training for next year?

Big Walk Attempt

Our goal was 43km – the biggest walk yet. However we severely underestimated the time it would take to complete this walk! For some reason all of us thought it would take the same amount of time as our standard 30km walks - wrong. We started at Parsley Bay and quickly realised what we were in for – when it says ‘steep’ on the map, it means steep! After walking past a girl doing the hike in socks and taking a few wrong turns, we soon realised how difficult the first 2 checkpoints were. After 30km we decided to call it quits and got a cab back to the cars – fading head torches and lack of food just weren’t motivation enough to continue; otherwise it could have really been a looong weekend.

Night Walk - Take 2!

Our second attempt at a night walk was a lot smoother than the first - i.e. we didn't get lost! We also finished 28km in a great time! Thank you to all our sponsors so far. Everyone has been so generous and supportive. With only 14 weeks to go, we are training hard and fundraising like mad! Our last update forgot to mention the loss of Rick the Stick. He was a great asset to the team and Charlie will miss him dearly - He was forgotten at Davidson Park. At present there has been no permanent replacement (a few temporaries) but nothing that's taken Charlie's fancy. RIP RICK. Stay tuned for our next walk - 43km...

Night Walk - call search and rescue!

Moore Walking’s latest training walk included our first night walk, with Charlie believing there would be no need for head torches – and wasn’t he wrong (again). That’s a $50 donation Charlie. An hour into walking in the dark and we realised we had walked off the trail and into the scrub. And while trying to get back on track we ended up in a stranger’s back garden! After thinking we found the trail again, we realised we were walking in the opposite direction. If it weren’t for Katie’s iphone and GPS we would probably have been the next stars RSPCA Animal rescue, or Bondi rescue – or one of those rescue shows. But the night walking will continue with another one this weekend! If we’re not at work on Monday, we’ll be somewhere between Frenchs Forest and St Ives - send search and rescue

Red Bellied Black Snake

Training walk 3

Training walk 3 - Sphinx War Memorial to Kambora Public School. Having been so under-prepared the previous week, we over compensated this week! Filled with Powerade, power gel, sandwiches and water, we were ready to go! A 4:30am wake up for a 6:30am start was tough, but Charlie’s driving certainly woke everybody up. Our first obstacle was a creek – easy to cross at low tide but what to do when it’s been raining? Katie O decided to attempt to cross it while Charlie took the bush bashing route of going around the creek – this proved the easiest way. Katie O got stuck in the middle of the creek and almost had to walk the rest of the way soaking wet if it weren’t for Dunk the Funk helping her back to the other side. Charlie shoe of choice was runners this week passing on the hiking shoes – 4 stacks later, a rolled ankle 3 times over and ripped skins and he definitely regretted that decision. JB was a trooper once again with no complaining whatsoever. We bid farewell to Dunk the Funk at St Ives Showground as he needed to share his wisdom and skills with the youth of our generation; coaching a soccer team. The 3 of us continued walking to Kambora Public School and finishing just in time for lunch – another 22km down.

Training walk 2!

Training walk 2 started at Kambora Public School. 30km? Easy we thought! We did 15km in less than 2 hours the previous week so we were expecting to complete 30km in roughly 4 - how wrong we were... The track started off relatively easy. Katie O took the lead and directed her team onto the sand and almost in the creek, until Charlie the Caterpillar Killer realised we were way off track! Halfway to the first checkpoint and danger struck - Charlie the Caterpillar Killer was faced with his worst fear; a snake! A big red bellied black snake was blocking the track (photos to be uploaded soon!). After some deliberation on how to get rid of it without it attacking us it quickly slithered back into the bush. A few wrong turns later and it started to pour with rain. The one thing that was keeping us going was K-Dun's estimated time until our next check point - 2km. That 2km proved to be the longest 2km ever after we forgot to take a sharp right hand turn. A couple of km later, tired and sore we finally arrived at our second checkpoint - when we realised how unprepared we actually came. 1 x hot cross bun, 1 x wrap and 2 x museli bars between 4 of us on a 30km walk. The last leg was the easiest - but the also the hardest. Walking on cement is painful when you have new shoes on! Our saving grace was a powerade from the local soccer team's canteen which kept us going a little longer. Next time we might bring a few more supplies... Stay tuned.

What a great cause, myself, Carra, Nando and the rest of the boys are right behind you on your quest. Rafa has asked for the facts of your walk before we contribute any more money (Hicks and Gillette are not too forth coming with funds these days) Keep the faith and walk on.... (PS with 4 new signings on their way, we are sure to finally deliver the title next season, promise).
