Matched Funding

In 2008, the Macquarie Bank team "Walk the Line" raised $66,265, half of which came from match funding by the Macquarie Group Foundation.

Many employers have a matched funding program whereby they will match dollar for dollar the amount you or your team fundraise for charity. Even if there is currently no such program in place, they could be more than willing to make a donation and support their employees as they support a good cause (it looks good for them also) … all you have to do is ask!

Remember, even if you are not representing your employer but are participating as an individual or with another team, you still may be eligible for matched funding from your employer.

Who to ask

Speak to your HR or CSR department and ask them if your company matches funds raised by their employees or has a program in place to donate a certain amount to the charitable causes supported by employees. Let them know what you will be doing (walking or running 100km of rugged bush trail in under 48 hours as a team of four) and what you hope to achieve (fundraising $X amount to help the world’s poorest communities in 28 countries around the world).

How to ask

The best way to ask is in person. Face to face is the best way to communicate your message, your fundraising goal and ask for support. If this is not possible, send an email with a link to your team page or call the appropriate person (and follow it up). If they want a letter or email outlining your proposal they will let you know (they may have supporting documentation they will ask you to fill out).

You can also offer to put your company's logo on your team page to publicise the fact that you are receiving support from your organisation. Everyone that visits your page will see the fact that they are helping you achieve your team’s goals and making a difference at the same time!

You can even put together a proposal to show you are serious about asking for their support. Use the promotional material on this website to help you.  It makes sense to follow the same principle of any client or supplier that is looking for their business or investment; you have to build a case for it.

How we can help

We can supply information or official documentation your company may need on behalf of Oxfam Australia detailing our charitable status. We can also send you donor reports for your team confirming the total amount you have raised and listing all your team’s donors.  We will be happy to send a letter of thanks and a Certificate of Appreciation after the event on request.
