The Epic Hoplites' Bowls Battle

post image

Breaking news: "The Epic Hoplites' Bowls Battle - success, or failure?" Thanks to everyone who turned up to the Bowls Day - we managed to raise a total of $610 (well, $611 to be exact - thanks Dave). Also, a salute to all those who supported the day behind the scenes. Plenty of food, plenty of bowls and great hospitality shown by the Fitzroy Victoria Bowls Club made for an absolutely brilliant day. The title of this blog may seem a little confusing to all of you - the day seems to have been a roaring success, no? Hrms - indeed so. However, it may shock you all to know that NONE (that's right! None!) of The Hoplites members were a part of the Victorious Team. In fact, our unnamed captain seemed to have been hexed by some greater power and managed to find himself dead last (so to speak) in the battlefield. Nevertheless, it has been concluded the Epic Bowls Battle was quite the event. Captains note: I must have done something to anger the powers that be - one too many boastful comments, perhaps? I demand a rematch! Congratulations to the Victors of the Day: Brett Long, Wyan Carter, Jill Sharpe and (insert name here!)

post image

Greetings and salutations! For those involved in last years Raffle, it's that time of year again! For the rest of you, please, GET READY TO RUMBBBLLLEEEE... and by that, I mean get ready to fend off the Hoplites' most elite raffle-ticket-selling-force in history (this claim, quite possibly, has some merit!). This year, we have many-a-great prizes to be won: a range of products valued at $200, donated by Torquay Pharmacy; Breville Café Modena Coffee Machine valued at $150; Jewellery valued at $120 (donated by the lovely Antonella from Oxfam Australia); not just one, but TWO pairs of sunglasses valued at $250, donated by Industrial Reef; two pairs of thongs, a pair of shoes and a T- shirt valued at $150, donated by Reef, Torquay; a box of Kayser chocolates, valued at $40 – donated by Not Just Fruit Torquay; two T- shirts, valued at $110 donated by Patagonia Shop, Torquay; 5 Fox caps, valued at $100, donated by Fox Racing,Torquay; Rialto pass valued at $100, donated by Fia and Patrick Walker (our dear Hoplites friends!); two Nova cinema passes, valued at $20; and more to come! No dates have been set for the drawing of the raffle as yet, but this will be posted up shortly. A huge THANK YOU to all those who have contributed prize to the raffle - your support is much appreciated. Captains note: a shout-out for Barry the Brain who procured (through very subtle persuasion, I'm sure) these donations.

Australian College of Complementary Medicine Pty Ltd

A great big thank you to the Australian College of Complementary Medicine (ACCM) Pty Ltd and, more to the point, Terry Sweeney (CEO) for pushing us well on our merry Hoplites' way to our target of $10,000. Not only has ACCM found a balance between both western and eastern medicines, but they've also found a balance between corporate drive and social responsibility. Thanks Terry! Captain's note: a bit more info to come on the ACCM shortly!

Torquay Health Foods

Thanks to Torquay Health Foods (Gilbert Street, Torquay) for providing us with little bags of nuts to help in our fundraising - and a special thank you for Sophie who has gone out of her way to organise this. ***Flashback*** Baz: Where are my nuts?... Oh no, I've lost my nuts!!! *Baz breaks down in hysterical laughter, whilst the rest of the Hoplites look on in despair, confusion and worry*. --- Gosh, memories of Trailwalker 2008 still haunt me.

The Hoplites - back in town!

post image

Greetings to you all! After having all completely annihilated the Trailwalker 2008 - with the wonderful and much-needed help of our great support crew - we have let ourselves ride on the wings of euphoria and passion once again (and did I mention Pain with a capital P?). The Hoplites will once again trek through the 100km's - and this time around, we look to better our finish-time of 40 hours and 40 minutes. Training is to commence shortly! On the other side, we have also pledged to raise over $10,000 again this year - and our Treasurer Baz Russell (having been the one who eagerly and quite optimistically suggested we go for Platinum once again) has (unwittingly) agreed to making up the difference. So, help The Hoplites help Baz help Oxfam Australia help the wider community. Cheerio - The Captain.
