It's easier the 2nd time
Check Point 3 and 4 – Completed Again! With our new recruit Matt we set off from Lysterfield to conquer the back breaking hills between CP3 and CP4 again. This time to our surprise the hills didn't feel that bad, was it our training finally paying off or was it just shock of seeing Hacketts hill the first time?. The next time we see these hills it's "game day".

The "Big" Walk
7-Mar-2010 - Check Point 4 to Check Point 7 (47.8km) - What a walk almost 50ks in 9.5 hours. This was our longest training walk to date and a big wake up call for how hard this challenge will be. It started through Olinda to Mt.Evelyn the day after the storms in Melbourne and to our surprise the trail was good, not too much mud, some of the downhill sections where fun with the wet surface. Arriving at Graham Colling Reserve (See Photo) we were met by our support crew and replenished our supplies as our next meeting with our support crew was not for another 33kms. Reaching Check Point 6 that’s when the legs and feet started to feel sore for the team, but a quick pie at the shop and we were off to complete the “Super Leg”. The Warburton and Aqueduct trails are long, flat and boring and after 6 hours of conversation and the same topic of “my legs are sore” and “why are we doing this” we decided that 1hr with our iPods would help and It did and then after walking almost 50kms the team was very happy to see the support crew and enjoyed the drive back to Olinda then home. We have 2 weeks to recover and then we return to Check Point 2 to Check point 4 and Hackett’s Hill. Looking forward to it! A big thanks to our support crews (Gina, Jess & Jess).

Running to Check Point 5
"Super Sunday" plans changed. The original plan was to walk with the Oxfam group and cover the 20.4km "Super" stage which is from checkpoint 6 to checkpoint 7, this plan was changed due to the support team sickness and when one of your support team is only 14mths old you can't argue too much. The new plan was to run, yes run from checkpoint 4 to checkpoint 5 a total of 14.4km, difficulty rating of 2 in 2 hours. This was hard going, the single width tracks and the steep declines on the Melba Track made running very hard. But in 2h:07m:45s the run was over and the support team were on time and ready for me at Graham Colling Reserve. One Note to all walkers the Optus mobile reception is very poor so make sure you and your support team know exactly where to be and when.

Check Point 3 and 4 – Completed
Check Point 3 and 4 – Completed. Hi supporters, the word for the day is “Steep Incline”. Hacketts Rd is a challenge (Thanks for the support message half way up – Oxfam). After walking 20km in beautiful Sherbrooke forest and then looking at this hill, we all felt like what have we done to deserve this, but we pushed through and had a smile at the end. (As you can see with Terry and Oli) We now know what a difficulty rating of 3 means and looking at the map is mostly downhill from now :). Next walk is the “Sunday Super Leg” on the 31-Jan-2010.
