The big one (before the really big one)!

On Friday night at 8pm we started out on the big training walk... somewhere in the 50 to 60km vicinity give or take due to detours around DSE back burning and other later night escapades. So after working all day we already pretty tired to start, good training we kept telling ourselves. We headed from Croydon out to Mt Evelyn before joining the Oxfam trail in reverse. It was good to see we weren't the only crazy people out for some late Friday night training as we passed 8 teams going the other way. Wearily we pulled in to Grants Picnic Ground at about 2:30am, to be met by our support crew for the evening, Tam. After a nice break it was back on the trail to Belgrave, before leaving the Oxfam trail to follow the railway line. Who knew Saturday trains started just after 4am?! From here we wearily trudged the hard pavement to Bayswater and then back to Croydon. As the sun was coming up we started getting some strange looks from passers-by, with our walking poles and head torches. Home by 8am for some bacon and eggs before bed!!!

Two Bays Walking Track & Local Wildlife

On Saturday Glenn, Kathleen and Kristen undertook the 2 Bays Walking Track form Arthurs Seat to Cape Schanck, with an extension to Gunnamatta. Our first interaction with the wildlife was amazing, with 4 Wedge Tail Eagles soaring very closely overhead. Then came the snake... but it was little and colourful and had obviously recently eaten and wasn't in a mood to care about our presence. Then came the first tiger snake we almost stood on. He didn't look so friendly, but required some encouragement to move off the track. In case that wasn't enough, not more than 15 minutes later we met another tiger snake! Quite paranoid now, we all jumped a few feet when we heard rustling in the bush a bit later on... it sounded like a huge snake... or a large male kangaroo... it was the latter. Finally getting to Gunnamatta Surf Beach and out of the habitat of the snakes, we had to run the gauntlet of the huge surf and incoming tide that covered the beach on many occasions. All in all, a nice walk, but we could have done without the wildlife interactions!

Some training with a difference

post image

For a bit of a change of pace, Glenn, Matty & Kristen headed to Tassie for a relaxing holiday mixed in with some interesting training walks. Meanwhile, back at home, Kathleen improved on her diving skills. The Tassie walking started easily enough, with a walk up 'The Nut' in Stanley. Then we undertook Frenchman's Cap in an ambitious 3 days. We experienced some knee deep mud on the way in and out, much to Glenn's delight. On day 2 we undertook the trip to the summit as a day walk. This extremely tough 14km walk took us 10.5hrs to complete!!! After some recovery time, we also did some walking around Freycinet, The Bay of Fires and Launceston, mixed in with a healthy balance of Tasmanian beer, wine and cheese! Thanks for all the support so far everyone!

Well true to our finishing line pact last year, we are back for 2010! We now have a new member - Kathleen. Training is starting this week... hopefully with less blisters, injuries and illnesses than last year!
