Day 1 Practice - 47.2 km Training

post image

Maria had a pass for the 45.2 km training walk on Saturday 13th (drinking wine in the Yarra Valley) leaving Darce, Pam and David from Team Jetsam to take on the training session. Darce was a late scratching at the start as she started running at 3:30am - some 3-and-a-half hours before we were due to get started. (Running to the toilet that is - something she ate or drank - and nothing to do with alcohol) So Pam & David set off for what was a practice of the Day 1 walk - Start to Checkpoint 4. Arriving at CP4 at 7 am to drive back to the Start and we were away by 8 am. In a little under 11 hours (including stops) we would be finished! Darce joined Pam & David a Lysterfield Lake (CP2) feeling much better. Pam's umentionable muscle got through with only minor niggles. David's feet continue to show no signs of blisters. Darce & Pam also mastered the art of dry land skiing with no skis - just poles. Ideal weather for walking too! Next training - Sunday 21/3 - is a practice fun for Day 2. CP 4 to the Finish 50+ km!

1,000 Steps - Just for practice

Pam & David decided to tackle the 1,000 Steps at Upper Ferntree Gully on Sunday 7 March. They then tackled the parallel Lyre Bird Track to make it 2 ascents and descents. Pam's [insert name of injured muscle that is not named in case it becomes irritated] held up well.

The team before the climb up Hacketts Hill (Can you Hackett, yes we did!)

Well our latest training session was on Saturday 27 February. Teams Jetsam and Flotsam set off at 8am in the morning from Grants Picnic Ground for a 38km stroll to Woori Yallock. Team Flotsam had a full crew, however David was missing from team Jetsam as he decided that drinking beer and playing golf with the boys was a much better idea. (He is out of pocket an extra $25 too as he had to pay for a pass to Febfast). So the girls from team Jetsam, Maria, Darce and Pam flew the flag. Our day started out with a lovely stroll through forested areas before we came upon Hacketts Road with the infamous Hacketts Hill, the girls made it up the hills without a problem. Maria has a great way of getting up the hills, she counts her steps, hoping that the hill will be over before she gets to 500, this particular one, and a few others on this adventure, lasted for over 1500 steps! We also encountered some amazing down hill paths, one so steep that we found it easier to run down it then walk (stopped us sliding down it on our butts). Pam encountered some issues with her ITB muscle requiring her to walk down hills sideways like a crab and Sonia, from Team Flotsam, found that going down hill doing some sort of gorilla walk she had picked up in her previous ice walking adventures, was the way to go! (I will let your imaginations go with that one!) We are still encountering interesting wildlife on our walks, this one included a number of goats and a cow who had just given birth to a brand new calf (so new that afterbirth was still attached and calf staggering around on spindly legs). We were pretty excited to finally see the Woori Yallock primary school come into view after over 8 hours of walking. High fives were given all round, shoes & socks removed, and tired bodies collapsed into our cars for the long drive back home. The team pulled up pretty well, no blisters, only Pam's ITB issues that are being sorted as we speak. Happy trails Jetsam!

So far so good....

Maria, David, Pam and Darce completed their longest training walk to date - over 35km - on Saturday 13 February. The weather was kind and with only a few blisters. Some new walking shoes made the going much easier. Darce and David were particularly pleased with their efforts given the longest walk either had done before hand was 20km and 7 km respectively.

David joins Team Jetsam!

We're thrilled to announce that David Auld has come to the resuce of Team Jetsam and stepped into the shoes of Lois (not literally, they'd be a wee bit small for him.......). David is joining Teams Flotsam and Jetsam on our next training walk on Saturday 13th February when we'll be walking from Checkpoint 1 - 3, that's nearly 35km. Looking forward to having David onboard and we hope he's looking forward to the challenge of putting up with us over 100km and 2 days....... :o)

Pam & Maria Training hard

post image

Maria and Pam training hard for Oxfam 100km - we walked from Yarri Wallock primary school (Checkpoint 6) all the way through to the finish - nearly 30km. The last 7km section was the toughest bit of the trail and we all had aching limbs and sore knees at the end of it - somehow Pam managed to run around shooting laser guns that same evening whilst the rest of us were nursing sore legs, ankles, knees and hips! Please donate online and support us to help Oxfam raise as much money as possible to help those in the greatest of need around the world. Team Jetsam

Team Jetsam - The Challenge

post image

We're taking part in Oxfam Trailwalker, a 100km endurance walk from Wheelers Hill to Wesburn, overnight, in teams of four, through the Australian bush. We're doing all this to raise money for Oxfam Australia, who work to fight poverty and injustice in 26 countries around the world, including Indigenous Australia. Take a look around at our space, and check out the places and people that Oxfam Australia helps. Team Jetsam have started their training for the 100km trailwalk and they've got off to a flying start - Darcy walked 25km around the Bay in the bistering sun last weekend and is looking forward to practising on the trail in a couple of weeks time.
