Sooky-Lah-Lah Call It Off Halfway!

As mentioned in the previous post, we had a bit of an issue with the walk attempted on 13th March. Namely, we had a big sook (ok, only Catpain and Kirsty had a big sook) and called it off halfway! The plan was to have a 'see how the other half live' and 'oooh, what a beautiful coastline we have' walk departing from Rushcutters Bay. The departure from Rushcutters Bay was fine, it was the continuation of the walk once we'd reached Bondi that was a problem. So, we made our way in a 'clockwise' direction from Rushcutters Bay to Double Bay and then onto Rose Bay. We continued through Vaucluse (where, whilst wandering through part of the Sydney Harbour National Park, Kirsty had a 'why did I stay out to 2am drinking and dancing last night' moment), crossed the suspension bridge over Parsley Bay and headed towards Watsons Bay. We saw a lovely looking bride at Camp Cove, decided we didn't want to do the South Head circuit (maybe a sign of things to come) then headed to The Gap. You may think that in our fragile condition (ok, only Kirsty was in a self-induced hungover world of pain), it may not have been wise to head towards a spot famous for suicides. Don't worry, there was no chance I was gonna walk the extra 10 metres to the point..... From The Gap we continued along the coastline towards Bondi where the aches and pains really started making the Matsin's sook. Kath and Pea graciously accepted that we (The Matsins) were big babies and allowed us to cut the walk short. So, once we'd arrived at Bondi Beach, we jumped in a cab and made our way back to Rushcutters Bay (and the car to take us home to the couch)! Hooray! All up we walked about 19kms (about half the distance we planned) in about 3 hours, which meant that at least our rating was still reasonable....

7 Bridges......

So much for updating more regularly.....Since the last update there has been one long team training walk and one 'sooky-lah-lah call it off halfway' walk. On 6th March, the team set out to complete the 7 Bridges Walk. The fact that this is a 7 bridge walk is still a contentious issue amongst the Nuts as we are sure we walked over at least 9 bridges.....Departing a little later than expected, we set out from Timbrell Park to the Iron Cove Bridge to complete the walk in a 'clockwise' direction. Too much talking and not enough thinking by Kirsty and Pea saw us heading in the wrong direction along Victoria Road. (Ofcourse, we should head left when the bridge is on our right....makes sense!) Luckily Catpain and Kath called the chattering idiots back and we then proceeded in the correct direction. Second 'official' bridge to cross was the Gladesville Bridge, followed by Tarban Creek Bridge and Fig Tree Bridge. Wandering through some beautiful parts of Sydney, we stopped for pies and continued 'clockwise' to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. After all walkers did a 'Rocky' impression up the stairs we were on the bridge, only two more to go. With the bulk of the walk behind us we seemed to hit a bit of a mental and physical hurdle. Pyrmont Bridge was crossed and we headed to the last bridge, ANZAC Bridge. The legs and feet were sore and we just wanted to finish, so we sucked it up and made the final push towards Timbrell Park. This was the longest training we had completed as a team and it was a learning experience. Pea should not eat pies whilst on the walk. Catpain is way too fit for the rest of us (but at least we can send him to run ahead and get us coffees). Kath cannot refill a water bladder without help. Kirsty popped her Harbour Bridge cherry, and liked it! In total we walked around 37kms in 8.5 hours which was longer than planned, but Greg and Kirsty still managed to make Roar and Snore.

Training Update

We were a bit late beginning our team training for heaps of reasons... torn medial ligaments, viral infections, inflamed knees, weddings to attend and other events that got in the road but we are working feverishly to get up to speed. The weekend just gone has seen us take on our most challenging walk together as we trekked from Brookly to Cowan on Sunday morning. The distance might not seem impressive (17kms) but the view from the top of some of the ascents certainly were. With grade 4 (5 being the toughest) ascents and descents, all of our old injuries were strenuously tested. We came through mostly unscathed with the injuries including splinters, removed skin and inflamation (i think this will be a constant friend). Thanks very much to all of those who have sponsored so far and to those that have promised but are yet to, we hope that you work as hard as we are to get it done. We will upload photos from our walk in the next few days and promise to make future updates more regularly.

Our Challenge

We're taking part in Oxfam Trailwalker, a 100km endurance walk from Wheelers Hill to Wesburn (Melbourne), overnight, in our team of four, through the Australian bush. We're doing all this to raise money for Oxfam Australia, who work to fight poverty and injustice in 26 countries around the world, including Indigenous Australia. PRUFC Trail Nut's Goal

As all at Petersham Rugby and Netball know we are a club that supports each other both on and off the field. With this in mind we have decided to set the bar as high as possible with our fundraising efforts. We hope that we can lead the teams in the Sports and Recreation catergory in the amount of money we raise. This would be a wonderful effort by our amazing club in helping the world be a better place for the less fortunate. So please get behind the retired players participating in this event as they get out of their comfort zones and tackle a new challenge in life. Thanks in advance for your support.
